Pre-Surgical Rehab

Pre-surgical rehab, often called prehab, is physical therapy you do before a scheduled operation because it brings benefits afterward. It helps you prepare mentally and physically, and may make recovery faster and easier. We offer it in Chubbuck and Pocatello, Idaho, where Matt Krammen, PT, DPT, Cert DN can see you before and after your procedure.

Why start therapy before the operation

You probably know you will need physical therapy after surgery to rebuild strength and range of motion. What many people do not know is that starting before your scheduled date can help you recover faster and more easily. It may even mean you need less pain medication.

Often the reason for surgery is that pain has become unbearable. Surgery is sometimes unavoidable, and when your doctor says it is the right choice, the best thing you can do is arrive in the best shape possible.

What prehab sets up

Several goals work together.

  • Preparing you mentally and physically for the operation
  • Helping you control pain and inflammation after surgery
  • Learning good movement patterns while you are at your strongest
  • Getting the muscles that support the injured area in the best shape you can
  • Knowing the recovery exercises before you need them, so there is no steep learning curve

Surgeries people often prepare for

Common reasons for surgery include:

Arthritis-related joint damage

Worn joints can lead to joint replacement. See Arthritis & Joint Pain.

A broken hip

A fracture may call for surgery. See Hip Pain.

Back problems

Fractures or herniated discs can lead to spine surgery. See Back Pain.

The same therapist before and after

Most patients find it helpful to have the same therapist for prehab and for recovery. When you already know your team, you feel more relaxed and better prepared. After your operation, our Post-Surgical Rehab page explains what rehab looks like.

Idaho allows direct access to physical therapy, so you do not need a referral from a doctor to begin. Some insurance plans, and Medicare typically, may still require one. If you are unsure, call us and we will check your plan. You do not need to be in pain to begin, and visits can start in Chubbuck, Idaho as soon as you have a date.
