Stroke Recovery

Stroke rehab, or physical therapy after stroke, is therapy to restore movement, walking, balance and strength after a stroke. Outpatient therapy picks up once you have left the hospital or inpatient rehab, and progress can continue for months and even years afterward. We provide stroke recovery therapy in Chubbuck, Idaho, for patients from Chubbuck and Pocatello.

Where outpatient therapy fits

Physical therapy usually begins quickly after a stroke, often in the hospital. Many people then go to inpatient rehab or home. Outpatient neuro rehab is the next step: more time for the things that still feel hard once you are back in your own house and routines.

A stroke can leave weakness on one side of the body, called hemiparesis, along with trouble with balance, walking and the use of an arm or hand. We start with a careful evaluation: your health history, your symptoms, your risk factors and how you move, stand and walk, plus a hands-on exam. Then we write a plan around your goals.

What we work on

Goals are set with you. These are the most common.

Walking after a stroke

Walking after a stroke often needs retraining. Gait training to improve how you step, shift weight and turn, with a cane or walker if one is right for you.

Balance

Balance training for standing, reaching and walking on different surfaces. See balance and dizziness therapy if dizziness is part of your story.

Arm and hand use

Arm weakness after stroke can make daily tasks hard. Task-specific training, with repeated practice of the things you want your arm to do, like reaching for a cup or buttoning a shirt.

Strength

Strength training for the weaker side, and for the stronger side that is doing extra work.

Muscle control

Neuromuscular re-education helps your brain and muscles reconnect, and so do careful, repeated movements.

Daily tasks and independence

Getting out of a chair, onto the toilet, in and out of a car, and up the steps at home.

Why recovery can keep going

The brain can build new connections when it practices a task over and over. Most of the fastest change comes early, and many people keep gaining skill months or years after a stroke when they train with purpose. We cannot promise how far you will get, but it is worth asking if you have stopped therapy and still have goals.

Your physical therapist also gives you exercises to do at home, so the work continues between visits.

Inside our Chubbuck clinic

Falls, shoulders and family

A few things that deserve their own attention.

Fall prevention

After a stroke, weakness and balance changes raise the risk of falling. We test it and practice safer movement, and we review your home.

Shoulder pain after a stroke

A weak arm can hang and strain the shoulder. We position and move it with care. For shoulder pain in general, see Shoulder Pain.

Family and caregivers

Bring them. We teach caregivers how to help you move safely and how to support your home exercises.

Other conditions

Parkinson's disease is on its own page, and our overview of neurological disorders covers more.

If you think someone is having a stroke, call 911

  • Face drooping on one side
  • Arm or leg weakness or numbness
  • Slurred speech or trouble understanding
  • Sudden vision loss, severe headache or loss of balance

Do not wait for symptoms to go away. Idaho allows direct access to physical therapy, so you do not need a referral from a doctor to begin. Some insurance plans, and Medicare typically, may still require one. If you are unsure, call us and we will check your plan.
