Therapeutic Ultrasound
Therapeutic ultrasound sends high-frequency sound waves into the tissue under your skin to warm it or gently vibrate it. At our Chubbuck, Idaho clinic, Matt Krammen, PT, DPT, Cert DN, PT, may include it in a plan for patients from Chubbuck and Pocatello who have a muscle spasm, a ligament injury or carpal tunnel symptoms.
How the sound waves work
Electricity passed through a quartz crystal makes the sound head give off a high-frequency sound wave.
Continuous waves
The sound waves make water molecules deep in the tissue vibrate, which creates a heating effect.
Pulsed waves
When the sound waves are pulsed, they vibrate the tissue instead of heating it.
At the cellular level
The stream of sound waves helps with nutrition exchange at the cellular level and with healing.
What it is used for
Ultrasound is used for these, and may help with:
- Ligament healing
- Muscle spasm
- Carpal tunnel syndrome, clinically
Ultrasound is one part of the plan
Your physical therapist decides at the evaluation whether ultrasound belongs in your care. It is used alongside other treatment, such as Manual Therapy, Therapeutic Exercise and electrical stimulation, rather than on its own.
We see patients from Chubbuck and Pocatello, Idaho. Idaho allows direct access to physical therapy, so you do not need a referral from a doctor to begin. Some insurance plans, and Medicare typically, may still require one. If you are unsure, call us and we will check your plan. We accept most insurance plans and verify your benefits before you arrive. Auto injury liens, Medpay and workers compensation are accepted, and there is a self-pay option. Call the office to confirm your plan.
