Traumatic Brain Injury

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) happens when an injury disrupts the way the brain functions. Physical therapy helps you regain physical function, relearn daily tasks and restore fitness, with a plan built from a full evaluation. We treat patients in Chubbuck and Pocatello, Idaho, and Jared Pugmire, PT, DPT, FAAOMPT, Dip Osteopractic, Cert. SMT/DN/VCS has concussion and vestibular training.

What causes a brain injury

The most common causes are:

Falls

A fall is one of the most common causes.

Car crashes

Head injuries are among the more serious results of a crash. See Auto Accident & Personal Injury.

Blows to the head

A hit during sport or work can disrupt brain function.

Concussion is a mild TBI

Concussion is a mild TBI and makes up most diagnosed brain injuries. If your injury is a concussion, our Concussion page covers recovery in detail. If dizziness or balance trouble is part of it, see Vestibular Rehab / Dizziness & Balance.

Brain injury is a medical matter first. Talk to your doctor about any head injury, and use physical therapy as part of recovery.

What physical therapy works on

The goals are practical ones.

Regain physical function

Getting your body moving the way it did.

Relearn daily tasks

Practicing the movements of everyday life.

Restore fitness and wellness

Rebuilding your fitness level and your overall wellness.

What your evaluation covers

Your therapist is a movement expert who uses hands-on care, education and prescribed movement.

  • Your health history and a detailed talk about your symptoms
  • Risk factors that go with the condition
  • Watching how you move, stand and walk
  • A hands-on physical assessment
  • A custom plan in line with your goals, challenges and needs

Go to the ER or call 911 for

  • Loss of consciousness, confusion or repeated vomiting after a head injury
  • A severe or worsening headache
  • Seizures, weakness or numbness
  • Slurred speech or unusual drowsiness

A new head injury needs a medical check before therapy. Idaho allows direct access to physical therapy, so you do not need a referral from a doctor to begin. Some insurance plans, and Medicare typically, may still require one. If you are unsure, call us and we will check your plan.
