How a high-intensity therapeutic laser works

This laser therapy physical therapy visit rests on a simple idea: a therapeutic laser is light energy that is focused into one area. The device is a unit with a hand-held wand your therapist moves over the area to be treated. Light energy reaches deeper layers of tissue and is thought to prompt cells to start their own healing process and to increase blood flow.

Our device is a Class IV laser. That is a higher-power type than the low-level or cold lasers used for surface tissue, which is why we call this deep tissue laser therapy.

A laser visit, start to finish

Laser therapy for pain is quiet, short and painless.

  • Treatment takes about five to ten minutes
  • You usually feel a soothing warmth where the laser is applied
  • There is no downtime, and you can go on with your day
  • You and your therapist wear protective eyewear while the laser is on
  • Your therapist decides where to treat, how long, and how many sessions you may need

How many sessions to expect

Some feel it right away

A few patients report feeling better after a single session.

Often within a few visits

Many begin to notice a change in about three treatments.

Set by your plan

The number depends on the problem and how it responds. Laser is one piece of your physical therapy, not the whole plan.

Laser therapy for plantar fasciitis, arthritis and other pain

We use laser therapy for plantar fasciitis, laser therapy for arthritis, and pain and inflammation from soft tissue problems and sports injuries, including:

Safety and who should not have laser

Laser therapy is painless and non-invasive, but we do not use it everywhere:

  • Never over a tumor or cancerous area
  • Never aimed at the eyes
  • Not over the abdomen of someone who is pregnant
  • Eyewear is worn for everyone in the room

Paired with exercise, plus cost and coverage

Laser may help calm pain and swelling, but it does not by itself build flexibility or strength. We combine it with shockwave therapy, electrical stimulation or exercise when the plan calls for it.

Call us and we will explain what your plan covers for laser therapy before you begin.

Idaho allows direct access to physical therapy, so you do not need a referral from a doctor to begin. Some insurance plans, and Medicare typically, may still require one. If you are unsure, call us and we will check your plan.

We accept most insurance plans and verify your benefits before you arrive. Auto injury liens, Medpay and workers compensation are accepted, and there is a self-pay option. Call the office to confirm your plan.
